It is shown that the complete set of nonlinear conservation equations for mass, vector momentum, and energy of compressible, dissipation‐free fluids can be transformed into a complex, scalar wave equation. The latter contains only a single nonlinear term which has the meaning of a pressure potential. Thus the transformation leads to a considerable simplification in the mathematical description of compressible fluids. As a concrete illustration of the wavemechanical formulation, the dispersion of acoustic waves is treated briefly.
