Following the “Synthetic Method” due to Seth a formula is found for the thickness of the boundary layer for the motion of thin liquids past solid boundaries. This formula is more reliable than R −1/2 as obtained hy Prandtl's boundary layer theory because it depends on the vorticity allowable outside the boundary layer. Besides, the pressure distribution inside the layer is not assumed to be that immediatey outside the layer, but is, in fact found to be different.
