Abstract An expression proposed by Lachance is suggested to correct for matrix effects in any system analysed by X‐ray fluorescence. If, for any reason, an analyst does not wish to use the fundamental parameters approach, this expression is a good alternative, yielding accurate results. It is in agreement with the theory and uses influence coefficients calculated from equations containing fundamental parameters only. It is compared with three other expressions correcting for matrix effects and its accuracy is illustrated by calculations for some hypothetical specimens.
