Currently available head‐mounted displays for virtual and augmented reality systems provide many of the visual cues that a viewer senses in the real world, but not the important accommodation cue. Approaches to solve this problem have been considered, but proposed solutions come at significant cost in terms of image quality and system complexity. In this paper we propose a simple system, based on electronic liquid crystal lenses. The design and performance of applicable electronic lenses are presented. A surprising result of the proposed design is the potential for a reduced system bandwidth.
