One of the most obvious uses of computer algorithms in the physical and mathematical sciences is in solving algebraic equations. A computational method often provides the only way of obtaining the roots of an equation, since analytic solutions exist only for a handful of cases. In other situations, a computational method may provide a faster route in obtaining the roots of an equation that has known analytic solutions. In this chapter, we will consider general equations of the form
