Abstract A dependence of spectral‐luminescent properties of heteroaromatic molecules on interactions with medium is reviewed and discussed. The nonspecific interactions modify, in some cases, an order of electronic states of a different orbital nature. It is shown that, in case of a protic solvent, the energy shift due to the nonspecific interactions is comparable with the energy shift due to the H‐bonding. The possible applications of considered concepts are suggested in the field of design of optical chemical sensors. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
