Abstract Methods of evaluation are considered and results presented of the study of the total energy distribution of electrons field‐emitted from tungsten at emission current densities of up to 10 5 A/cm 2 . The high‐energy tails in the energy distribution are examined and their dependence on electric field strength, emission current density, work function, and residual gas pressures in the vacuum chamber.
