Abstract The spinless fermion model which takes into account the transfer and the nearest neighbour Coulomb interaction of fermions is treated in a two site cluster approximation. For the linear chain the results are compared with the exact solution for the ground state and with other approximations. In two‐and three‐dimensional lattices the order–disorder transition is considered in dependence on the transfer energy and the phase diagram is calculated. The validity of the theory for the description of the order–disorder transition in superionic conductors is discussed.
