Abstract Measurements of the spontaneous polarization of doped and undoped NH 4 Cl at the order‐disorder phase transition are carried out. It is found that the cause of the polarization is an off‐centre position of divalent impurities. The transition into the polarized state is of first order and is most probably caused by a coupling between aligned dipole moments of the centers and a distortion of the lattice due to the reverse piezoeffect.
