Abstract The localized bipolaron state in ionic crystals is investigated taking account of the exchange interaction. The state is shown to be thermally stable under all values of the parameter ϵ/ n 2 (ϵ is the dielectric constant, n is the index of refraction). At large enough values of ϵ/ n 2 (> 26) the existence of two electron centres and positive vacancies is energetically profitable, and the one‐electron (neutral) centres are absent. Such a situation is apparently realized in chalcogenide glasses where the local lattice distortions near the centres are large and hence the local polarization is large as well.
