The splitting of cubic levels by crystal field components of lower symmetry is evaluated with particular reference to the Γ 8 quadruplet. Defects and the ion‐lattice interaction are two distorting mechanisms which are investigated. An explanation of the linewidth of Tm 2+ :CaF 2 is given, and certain features of the Yb 3+ :CdS spectrum are discussed.
