Abstract Starting from the method of Methfessel, Middelhoek, and Thomas [1] for the determination of the exchange stiffness, theoretical considerations are performed about the magnetization reversal in a ferromagnetic thin film with the easy magnetization direction in the plane of the film. The dependence of the magnetization directions on the parameters of the film on an inhomogeneous magnetic field to produce the “fanning”‐magnetization, and on an arbitrary homogenous magnetic field for the magnetization reversal is discussed. The knowledge of the deviation of the surface magnetization from the easy magnetization direction permits to determine the exchange stiffness.
