Abstract The ground state of Gd 3+ ions substituting for Y 3+ in YAl 3 (BO 3 ) 4 single crystal has been studied by EPR method. Spin Hamiltonian parameters and their signs for Gd 3+ ion in trigonal symmetry ( g z  = 1.9893 ± 0.0002, g x  =  g y  = 1.9860 ± 0.0002; $b_2^0 $  = 386.15 ± 0.11; $b_4^0 $  = −12.65 ± 0.07; $b_6^0 $  = 0.35 ± 0.10) were determined. Structural phase transition manifested as a discontinuous change of splitting of spectrum was observed near 157 K.
