Abstract The purpose of this article is to analyze efficiently a bent optical waveguide that is connected by two straight symmetric optical waveguides by the 3D imaginary‐distance beam‐propagation method (BPM). The BPM is implemented with 3D finite difference. We can obtain propagation constants and the field profile for the fundamental mode. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
