Abstract In this article, a novel compact elliptical monopole ultra‐wideband antenna with dual notched bands is proposed and investigated. The dual‐notched characteristic is realized by an elliptic arc‐shaped slot inserted in the elliptical monopole and a compact coplanar waveguide resonant cell in the feed line. The measured results show that the frequency band of VSWR ≤2 covers 3.1 to 10.6 GHz UWB band, while the notched frequency bands are 3.45–3.75 GHz which covers 3.5 GHz WIMAX and 5–6 GHz which covers 5.15–5.85 GHz WLAN band, and the two notched bands are separately achieved. The proposed antenna has a monopole‐like radiation patterns. Gain of the proposed antenna and transfer function study show that dual band‐notched characteristics achieved which conforms with the results of VSWR. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
