Abstract Compact and broadband gap‐coupled microstrip antennas using modified variations of the rectangular microstrip antenna (MSA), namely, C‐shaped, shorted L‐shaped, W‐shaped, and square‐ring MSAs, are proposed. These antennas have large bandwidth with a reduced total patch size. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
