A new periodic metallo‐dielectric structure embedded in a high‐dielectric‐constant layer within a multilayer substrate configuration for a microstrip patch antenna is proposed and studied. The complete 2D periodic structure of the antenna's planar metallic elements is simulated using a finite‐difference‐based method. The impedance bandwidth and gain of the antenna are measured. The multiple‐resonance structure proposed achieves much wider bandwidth, as compared to that of the single multilayer microstrip antenna. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
