Abstract In this paper, a parameter, named as the changing rate of impedance (CRI) derived from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data was selected. The deterioration process of organic coating was investigated by analyzing this parameter using neural network toolbox. In addition, four parameters characterizing the coating state were fitted by appropriate equivalent circuits (ECs). Integrating all the results of CRI and the evaluation of fitted parameters, it can be deduced that three stages were presented in the entire coating deterioration process, which separately represented the process of water penetration, corrosion acceleration, and coating deterioration. Furthermore, CRI was proved to be a credible parameter to depict coating state in its entire deterioration process.
