Abstract The Raman intensity spectra of potassium phosphate and diphosphate in aqueous solution have been measured against perchlorate solution as an external standard. Including the intensities of triphosphate, proportionality was found between the total trace scattering, which covers the PO stretch frequencies only, and the number of PO bonds. The force field for PO 4 3−was revised according to the requirement of the intensity ratio of ν 3 and ν 4 . A tentative force field for P 2 O 7 4was calculated. Based on these normal coordinate analyses, the electro‐optical parameters of PO bonds in phosphate and pyrophosphate are given.
