Abstract Raman spectra of the lattice modes of the Group IV tetrachlorides GeCl 4 , SiCl 4 , SnCl 4 and TiCl 4 at 20 K are reported. Similarities in the spectra suggest that the crystal structures are identical or closely related. Frequency ratios of corresponding peaks and differences in intensity patterns indicate that coupling between modes of translational and librational origin may be an important factor.
