Abstract The Mandel'shtam‐Brillouin spectra of single crystals of ZrO 2 –Y 2 O 3 and HfO 2 Y 2 O 3 solid solutions have been measured and the results explained qualitatively. Using the methods of Mandel'shtam‐Brillouin spectra and ultrasound propagation the elastic and photoelastic constants of single crystals of ZrO 2 Y 2 O 3 and HfO 2 Y 2 O 3 solid solutions have been found and their dependence on the composition obtained. The elastic and photoelastic properties of single crystals of these solid solutions are discussed.
