Role of cytokinins in flower and fruit development After a survey of the literature on the role of cytokinins in flower development, it is discussed whether the accumulation of cytokinins in developing seeds is a cause or the result of the sink activity of these seeds. Although most data indicate accumulation of cytokinins derived from elsewhere, possible local biosynthesis of cytokinins within developing seeds should be further investigated, particularly in experiments with isolated ovaries and ovules cultured in vitro .
