A stable L‐form variant was isolated from a soil‐inhabiting, orange red‐pigment coryneform bacterium belonging to the genus Rhodococcus. The variant differed from the parental strain in colony and cell morphology, in growth rate and obligatory requirement of B‐vitamins and amino acids, in temperature sensitivity, in susceptibility to antibiotics affecting cell wall synthesis, and in the inability to utilize hydrocarbons as sole carbon sources for growth.
