A number of heat‐tolerant (28‐55 °C) and thermophilic (55 °C) Bacillus ‐strains was isolated from spontaneous self‐heating industrial and agricultural waste effluents, high in organic matter. The experiments were run in adiabatic vessels under laboratory conditions. Samples taken at temperatures higher than 45 °C contained primarily members of the aerobic spore‐formers ( Bacillus spp. ) Isolates, capable of growing at 55 °C, belonged to either B. coagulans or B. stearothermophilus. Among the 21 isolates, 12 were classified as heat‐tolerant mesophiles, the remaining number as thermophilic strains.
