Abstract Methods have been devised for the synthesis of a range of L‐amino acids and of certain of their derivatives and of D‐serine labelled with 3 H at their α‐carbon atoms by a racemisation method followed by enzymic resolution. Conditions have been found which allow good recovery of materials of high specific activity for a given outlay of isotope with the added advantage that experimental technique has been maintained to the simplest level possible The stereochemical purity of the labelled amino acids synthesized is in excess of 99.99%. The 3 H‐labelling method for determining C‐terminal residues in peptides developed by Matsuo (1) has been briefly investigated.
