The uptake and metabolism of [ 11 C‐ methyl ]choline was examined in tumour bearing mice. Tumours showed [ 11 C‐ methyl ]choline, [ 11 C‐ methyl ]betaine and [ 11 C‐ methyl ]phosphocholine, whereas in plasma only [ 11 C‐ methyl ]choline and [ 11 C‐ methyl ]betaine were observed. To correct for the contribution of [ 11 C‐ methyl ]betaine to [ 11 C‐ methyl ]choline derived radioactivity in tissues, [ 11 C‐ methyl ]betaine has been prepared from [ 11 C‐ methyl ]choline, isolated by HPLC and the position of incorporation of C‐11 label confirmed by [ 11/13 C]co‐labelling and NMR.
