A short total synthesis of the ceramide (2 S ,3 R ,4 E )‐2‐(octadecanoylamino)‐4‐octadecene‐1,3‐diol ( 1 ) is reported, using (+)‐diethyl L ‐tartrate ( 2 ) as the optically active starting material.
