Cyclocondensation of 4‐(2‐hydroxyphenyl)‐3‐buten‐2‐one ( 1 ) with o ‐aminothiophenol yields 10‐methyl‐11‐oxa‐2‐thia‐9‐azatetracyclo[8.7.1.0 3,8 .0 12,17 ]octadeca‐3,5,7,12,14,16‐hexane ( 2 ). Similar reaction with o ‐phenylenediamine affords the 11‐oxa‐2,9‐diaza analogue 3 . The 2‐hydroxyphenylbutenone 1 and 2‐hydroxychalcone ( 5 ) show a different bridging ability.
