The application of systems engineering at the component level encounters difficulties both from the perceptions of the component‐level developer and the basic assumptions of the existing systems engineering standards and practices. This paper identifies several of these difficulties and proposes ways of treating them. It is aimed at both the component‐level developer as well as developers making decisions about system components.
