To understand actual viewing conditions at home is important for lighting and TV design or program broadcast. The preferred luminance level of LCD TVs under actual viewing conditions is also important in order to obtain both good picture quality and low power consumption. Chinese's viewing environment and behavior at home are investigated in this paper. The results show that when the viewers watch TV in the daytime, the ambient illumination fluctuates with the time and weather. While at night, the intensity of ambient illumination is relatively dim, which reflect the lighting requirement of most viewers. The viewing distance is between 180cm to 350cm which is 4 to 9 times of the screen height. For most families, the watching time is lower than 3 hours per day. The first three favorite programs are series, news and entertainment program.
