We studied the rubbing cloths with different pile length and cloth materials, and investigated their influences on the alignment property of the alignment layer. It has been found that rayon cloth which contains fine TiO 2 particles provides an alignment layer with low pretilt angle and large azimuthal anchoring energy and is suitable for the rubbing process in the manufacturing of IPS or FFS mode LCDs.
