Phenotypic properties, metabolic end products and gel electrophoretic protein patterns of indole‐negative and indole‐positive Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated from beer breweries are reported. Results obtained clearly indicate that the indole positive K. pneumoniae strains represent a distinct group of klebsielleae and that they should be placed in a distinct group of Klebsielleae and that they should be placed in a distinct taxon, namely, Klebsiella oxytoca .
