Abstract Recently published research from Kosrae, the easternmost of the Caroline Islands, has identified a number of ‘firsts’ in the prehistoric record. These include: the first recovery of prehistoric pottery on Kosrae; possibly the first identification of prehistoric taro and breadfruit pollen in Remote Oceania; and the first identification of breadfruit from prehistoric charcoal. These and a number of other significant findings are discussed in relation to interpreting this data in its local and regional contexts. Issues discussed relate to the cause of island landscape transformations and to the possible processes of island colonisation.
