This article provides a description of the category of mental disorders called “paraphilias” as well as the specific types of paraphilias. Guidelines are provided for assessment of people who present with paraphilic behavior. A review of inventories and other tools that can facilitate diagnosis and description of paraphilias is included. In addition, effective approaches to treatment of these disorders as well as personal and professional issues for counselors treating people with paraphilias are briefly discussed.
