This memorial column pays tribute to Horst Otterstetter, technical advisor to the Inter‐American Association of Sanitary Engineering and Environmental Sciences (AIDIS), who passed away May 21, 2011. During his long career, he worked with AIDIS, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and as an adjunct professor of Health and Environment in Sustainable Development at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. The article summarizes his education, career in water, and the many activities he was involved with in serving as a member of AWWA, including being named an AWWA honorary member in 1995 and a lifetime member in 2000. Also a member of Water For People, he served on its Board of Directors between 1991 and 1997.
