In June 2000, a meeting of water utility leaders and stakeholders, called “A Strategic Assessment of the Future of Water Utilities,” was held in Denver, Colorado, to identify and debate water utility trends. The group identified more than 50 trends that were categorized into several potential future scenarios, which provided the basis for an American Assembly held in Orlando in September 2000. The delegates to this assembly debated and recorded their perspectives on trends and scenarios representing challenges to water utilities. The primary strategies for leveraging those trends are described in this article, along with major trends identified by the delegates that were broken down into seven broad categories.
