In an effort to help water utilities realize significant cost reduction, the AWWA Utility Communications Architecture (UCA) Standards Committee is recommending that the water industry adopt the UCA standard. This is because current monitoring and control systems that are based on proprietary and de facto standard communications protocols require costly custom data‐translation and data‐mapping components. UCA is an existing, proven standard that can significantly take the bite out of such expenses because it eliminates the need for this customization. This Committee Report highlights UCA's benefits to the industry and provides a road map for adopting it. Because UCA is a major advance in monitoring and control system technology, it simplifies system design, implementation, and maintenance, therefore reducing costs in the process.
