Horizontal‐flow sedimentation basins and grit chambers are often constructed because of their predictable performance and their tolerance to shock loads. However, these processes often demonstrate poor performance as a result of basic design problems. Hydraulic scale‐model studies conducted on sedimentation basin and grit chamber performance are discussed and related to practical design guides for minimizing basic design errors.
