The month's question asks who is responsible for testing and maintaining fire hydrants, the fire department, the city, or the water utility. Unless otherwise stated, the water purveyor (the hydrant owner) retains the responsibility for maintenance and inspection of the hydrants. Other issues of hydrant operation and maintenance should be specifically stated in a written agreement. Several other hydrant uses are discussed, along with ordinance requirements regarding authorized and unauthorized hydrant use. Additional considerations such as cross‐connections, hydrant locks, and other security devices are discussed.
