In this article, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PDEP) shares its experiences with filter bed‐expansion measurements. Over a period of 14 years, the PDEP has conducted detailed filter plant performance evaluations at 340 filter plants, and has seen some common performance trends that have refined its expansion measurement techniques to allow for efficient gathering of usable information. The article describes a measuring device and provides instructions on how to make and use it.
