This article describes a new statewide program developed by the Disaster Preparedness Committee, formed by the North Carolina Section, American Water Works Association and Water Environment Association. This program, coined MADIRT for Mutual Aid Disaster Intervention Response Teams, provides standardized emergency mutual aid teams ready to address the needs and specifications of a particular system. MADIRT includes all the personnel, equipment, and materials necessary to provide effective emergency assistance to other communities. With standardized teams, municipalities will be able to indicate in advance their probable mutual assistance capabilities, and communities in need will be able to specify the type(s) of teams needed without extensive discussion of specific needs.
