This article is an overview of a landscape water assessment program implemented by two water purveyors in the Seattle area during the 1995 and 1996 irrigation seasons. A small database provides some indication of program effectiveness and the trend of decreased water use observed after the assessments were completed. The average reduction in water use for landscapes was 38.2 percent when comparing use for 1994 and 1996, the years preceding and following the 1995 assessments. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the described landscape assessment program as a viable and beneficial program that should be considered when evaluating an overall conservation strategy.
