Abstract A new synthesis route for β‐MgAl 2 C 2 is presented. The synthesis of this carbide compound was based on a solid‐state metathesis reaction. The material was prepared at 900 °C from aluminium powder, MgCl 2 and Li 2 C 2 . The reaction product was inspected by X‐ray powder diffraction and 13 C NMR spectroscopy.
