Our cover features Phorbol 12‐myristate 13‐acetate (PMA)‐differentiated THP‐1 cells infected with Porphyromonas gingivalis , a bacterium involved in human periodontitis. Cells are immune‐stained for nuclei (red) and specks of self‐oligomerized apoptosis‐associated speck‐like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain (green). The image is taken from the article by Okano et al. (pp. 1965–1974), where the authors show that secreted and released factors from P. gingivalis trigger NLRP3 inflammasome activation and ASC speck formation, which are independent from the bacterial protease gingipain. Furthermore, the authors show that active caspase‐1 and mature IL‐1β are eliminated by proteolytic activity of secreted gingipains.
