Commonly used thiourea‐based antithyroid drugs and their selenium analogues exhibit remarkable peroxynitrite‐scavenging activities and protect against peroxynitrite‐mediated protein tyrosine nitrations. This study suggests that the antioxidant activity of these compounds may protect the thyroid gland from oxidative and nitrosative stress during hyperthyroidism.
