Correlation of structure and property : Ba 2 Mn 2 Si 2 O 9 consists of Mn 2 O 8 dimers made up of two basal‐edge‐sharing MnO 5 square pyramids. Magnetic measurements show that this material displays a spin‐singlet ground state with a large spin gap. The spin‐dimer analysis suggests that the origin of the spin gap is likely to arise from a large intra‐dimer interaction between the Mn1O 5 and Mn2O 5 square pyramids.
