Abstract It is possible to study the very rapid exchange rates between molecules or ions, L, coordinated to paramagnetic ions and the free molecules or ions, L * , in the body of the solution by measuring the line width of the NMR signal of L * .\documentclass{article}\usepackage{amssymb}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$${\rm ML}_{\rm n} + {\rm L}^{*} \rightleftharpoons {\rm ML}_{\rm n}^{*} + {\rm L}$$\end{document} Lifetimes of coordinated ligands that can be measured fall into the range of milliseconds to microseconds. The lifetime, or an upper limit to the lifetime, can be measured directly.
