Abstract The paper is concerned with the description of structural defects of a mechanicof continuum in terms of geometry. It depends on the spacing of defects relatively to the spacing m the underlying discrete physical structure, if defects may be described separately by the continuup. picture; otherwise a microdistribution of defects is arising. It is shown, how the microrotations resni microdeformations of a micropolar resp. multipolar continuum give a phenomenological description for a remaining microdistribution of defects. Geometrically this is described by the Lemma of Riccl resp. the violation of this lemma.
