Abstract Structural relationships between the numbers of the various types of steady states exhibited by a mixed culture of microorganisms growing in a chemostat have been obtained. The analysis is based on the degree theory and utilizes Hopf's index theorem. Useful information concerning the culture growth and general conclusions pertaining to the nature of the possible steady states are obtained from these relationships. An alternate method of stability analysis, based on the above results, has also been developed and applications to several cases of growth of indirectly interacting populations which demonstrate the efficiency of the method are presented.
