The extractive membrane bioreactor (EMB) has been shown to be successful in treating organic pollutants which are often unaffected by conventional biological treatment of wastewaters from the chemical industry. In the EMB process, biofilms are involved in the degradation of organic pollutants. This paper summarizes recent advances in membrane‐attached biofilm modeling and presents a mathematical analysis of the rate‐limiting mechanisms in the system.
